Quantico National Military Cemetary, Triangle, Virginia … and the Hammer of Thor

Quantico MCB, Triangle, Virginia

Quantico National Military Cemetary is just down the road about 15 miles from my home. For just as many years I have meant to visit it. Yesterday was beautiful weather and so I found another Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) to make the short road trip with me. (Two chiefs are more than a tribe!)

Al Alborn
Al Alborn (USA, Ret) was my travel companion to visit the Quantico National Cemetary.

While the cemetary sits adjacent to Quantico Marine Corps Base, it is truly a national cemetary with members of all branches of military service resting there.

Do you have a relative buried in a national cemetary? Just curious? There is a central database of all burials for all national cemetaries provided by the Veterans Administration: Search Now.

One of the more curious aspects of the visit was discovering various kinds of religious symbols on some of the gravestones. Below is an example of just some — to include a symbol for Atheists and another that is ‘The Hammer of Thor’.

Gravestone Religious Symbols

There are many other (almost 60) approved religious symbols that can appear on a veteran’s gravestone. The Veterans Administration refers to these symbols as ‘Emblems of Belief‘.

Being a family historian I did some quick research on all Goldens interred at Quantico and have added some information about their lineages. Anyone with additional information is welcome to write to me at Norfolk1956@gmail.com

For my son Kevin — Inspirational ‘Get Off Your Ass’ Quotes

Inspirational ‘Get Off Your Ass’ Quotes

My son Kevin is now in his 5th week of military basic training. They call it ‘Beast Week’ — it is supposedly the most challenging week.

When I went through basic training (Army, July 1974 — hotter than hell!) every week seemed challenging to me … but then, I have always felt challenged.

Kevin will do well. He is smart, smart, smart … but not to be confused with the Ever Ready Bunny!

BEAST WEEK inspirational quotes that I sent to my son.

Jobs / Coach gets a thank you note

One of my soccer players was recently rummaging through their old email.

He had kept an email that I had sent to him in 2009 just as he was graduating high school. Since then I have recently gotten both a personal and a written thank-you for my career advice … from back in what must seem the dark ages for a young person.

Our correspondence follows. I have substituted Soccer Player X for their real name and email address.

Yes. Mark confirmed you as an All-Star.

And you should know that in my mind that you always on the A list. Not
only are you a favorite player but you’ve got great attitude … and
attitude counts in life.

A bit of career advice – study hard and work hard. Focus on your job.

My role in life is as a very senior recruiter for almost 600
organizations. I make lots of money giving advice.

Here’s a bit of free advice: things will get worse in the employment
world. Much, much worse. Unemployment will especially hit two
demographic groups: young folks like yourself and men under the age of
35. Lose a job and you may not get another for a long while.

I don’t see a rebound in jobs until 2014 or 2015. Things could get
somewhat better in 2012 or 2013 … but my advice is to think about
where you are going to be in 5 years.

Hopefully you are going to college. The next 4-5 years will be a great
time to have an alternative other than having to seek full-time
employment.

Here is what I want you to study: pick almost any subject you want BUT
seek out a B.S. degree over a B.A. degree. DO NOT WASTE your
electives: devote your elective credits to understanding business
processes, “enterprise” communications and networks (you don’t have to
become a geek), and statistics. Your future will depend upon being
competitive and surviving on statistical margins — and operations
like Bloom survive on thin margins (usually < 5%).

America WILL rebound with jobs about the time you graduate from a 4
year degree. But the way people earn money and work will be very
different in 5 years.

If you follow my advice you will be very employable at the right time
in your life. Synchronicity matters.

… And of course I look forward to seeing you on the field as an All-Star.

Best regards,
Coach

The ‘End Times’ are upon us …

‘Ding, DONG … DONG, Ding’ went the doorbell.

My dogs went into a panic: Intruder alert!

There were two very primly dressed ladies at my front door. ‘Hello’ sez me. ‘Hello’ sez they, ‘Can we ask you two questions.’

With coffee cup firmly in hand, but almost empty: Sure.

Q #1: Don’t you agree that the world is becoming ever more troublesome? … Umm, no. Am pretty sure that the world has always been a fairly messed up place.

Q #2: Don’t you agree that the future looks grim and the end times are coming? … Well yes, I did hear that the world will end one day. But that is about four billion years into the future … so am not overly worried.

Bonus Question: Wouldn’t you like to know Jesus’ answers for these questions? (The dogs are still going crazy. They aren’t happy unless they get a chance to bite and nip at some heels.) … No, thank you. Perhaps another day.

As they left, the lead questioner noted: You have beautiful flowers and a nice smile, too.

Today is Monday. Not even noon yet. It is going to be a good week.

Getting to Heaven … through an Irish child’s mind

You gotta love the Irish people.

A true Story from an Irish Sunday School Teacher:

… Editor’s Note: All stories reputed to be true, per the Internet, are true!

I was testing children in my Dublin Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven.

I asked them: If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?

‘NO!’ the children answered.

If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the garden, and kept everything tidy, would that get me into heaven?

Again, the answer was ‘NO!’

If I gave sweets to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into heaven?

Again, they all answered ‘NO!’

I was just bursting with pride for them. I continued: Then how can I get into heaven?

A little boy shouted out: ‘YUV GOTTA BE FOOKN’ DEAD.’

Thanks to George Harris for passing along this bit of humor.
